Appropriate Assessment Screening Reports (Stage 1)

In accordance with the requirements of the EU Habitats Directive, we carry out stage 1 AA screening reports to accompany proposed development projects. AA Screening will determine whether the proposed plan or project, alone or in combination with other plans or projects, is likely to have a significant effect on European Sites/Natura 2000 sites. These environmental designations include Special Areas of Conservation (SAC’s) and/or Special Protection Areas (SPA’s). If likely significant effects from the project can be ruled out, the assessment is complete.

Natura Impact Statements (Stage 2)

Under the EU Habitats Directive, if proposed project is likely to cause significant effects on a Natura 2000 site, or require mitigation measures/measures to reduce the harmful effects on a European Site, a Natura Impact Statement with associated mitigation measures is required to protect these Environmental Designations as part of the project.

Ecological Impact Assessment

Under the Wildlife Act works that may result in negative impacts on a Natural Heritage Areas (NHA’s) may require an Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA). An EcIA investigates the impacts a development will have on the environment, biodiversity and wildlife.

Environmental Impact Assessment Screening

The EIA Directive from the EU aims to ensure a high level of protection for the environment and Human Health. EIA Screening is a procedure used to determine whether a proposed project is likely to have significant effects on the environment. Some proposed large-scale projects may be under the threshold for full Environmental Impacts Assessment (EIA) but need to be screened and assessed to demonstrate how they are below EIA threshold, or whether a full Environmental Impact Assessment Screening report is required. This office prepares EIA screening reports on development proposals.

Ecological Clerk of Works

During the construction phase of a proposed development it may conditions that an ecologist is on site to monitor, mitigate and protect the surrounding environment. Site reports and guidance is offered.

Invasive Species Report

For planning purposes Invasive species may be required to be assessed, due to their potential harmful impact on surrounding environment. We can identify potential invasive species on sites and work to ensure that the proposed development does not spread these species.

Bat Surveys

Bats are a keystone species in Ireland, as such all species of bats are protected under Irish law and Lesser Horseshoe Bat is also protected under EU law. We offer surveys which assess the site for its suitability for bat species and will carry out both a transect survey and a static detector survey on site. The optimal survey season for Bats is between May and September and is weather dependent. However, roost inspections can be carried out throughout the year.

Bird Surveys

Ireland is required under the terms of the EU Birds Directive (2009/147/EC) to designate Special Protection Areas (SPAs) for the protection of:

  • Listed rare and vulnerable species
  • Regularly occurring migratory species
  • Wetlands, especially those of international importance
  • Where a proposed plan or development has the potential to disturb protected bird species, or their supporting habitats, dedicated bird surveys must be conducted as part of the planning application.

At Enviroplan Consulting Ltd. suitably qualified and experienced ecologists utilise a range of techniques to deliver comprehensive bird surveys. We specialise in:

  • Wintering bird surveys (survey season: September to March)
  • Breeding bird surveys (including Hen Harrier Surveys)

When all relevant data is collected a bird survey report is prepared to detail methodology, results and mitigation measures if applicable.
